Online Advertising A/B Testing

Online Advertising A/B Testing

An A/B test allows you to compare two different versions of an online ad. One portion of the target audience sees Version A, while another portion sees Version B. You then evaluate which version performs better.

What Can Be Tested?

In online advertising, many different elements can be compared, such as:

  • Images
  • Text
  • Headlines
  • Call-to-Actions
  • Colors
  • Banner Formats
  • Placements

It’s important to change only one variable at a time whenever possible. This makes it easier to determine later which change was responsible for the difference in results.

How Does an A/B Test Work?

First, two variants are created. These are shown to comparable user groups under conditions that are as similar as possible.

The results are then compared using predefined metrics. These can include, for example:

  • Click-through rate
  • Number of conversions
  • Time on page
  • Number of sign-ups or purchases
  • Cost per conversion

The more successful variant can then be used going forward.

Don’t decide too soon

An A/B test should run long enough to collect sufficient data. If the number of users or clicks is too small, random fluctuations can quickly lead to incorrect conclusions.

That’s why it’s important to carefully evaluate the results and not make a decision based on just the first few reactions.

After the test is before the test

Even a successful variant can be further optimized. New images, text, or calls to action can be tested against each other again.

Through this continuous testing, online advertising can be improved step by step.
